How to prepare for phone number normalization in the Front APIIMPORTANT

On September 1st 2024, we will be introducing E.164 phone number normalization to the Front API to address issues caused by inconsistent phone number handles attached to contacts. Phone number handles for contacts in Front can be created via the API, the Front contacts manager, incoming messages in channels, CRM contact syncs, and CSV import of contacts. With so many different ways of creating contacts and storing phone numbers for those contacts, it’s important to normalize the data because the different input formats can lead to duplicate contacts and related search issues. To prepare for this change, make sure your API requests are sending valid phone numbers with the country code included. Country codes must be preceded by a plus (+) sign. Read the “Potential impacts” section below for details.If you experience any issues with phone number normalization, reach out to us and we can roll the feature back for your company instance to give you more time to address the change. Dynamic objects now leverage the rule systemPLATFORM UPDATE

Dynamic objects are now integrated with rules. This means that you can use Front’s powerful rule system to customize when and how dynamic objects apply to your workflows. IMPORTANTRules have been auto-generated for all existing dynamic object configurations. These auto-generated rules have been named Create dynamic objects. While you are welcome to edit these rules, please note that disabling or deleting these rules will stop the associated dynamic objects from working. Where to manage dynamic object rulesYou can manage existing dynamic object rules from Settings > Company name / Workspace name > Rules. As noted in the above callout, dynamic objects that you created prior to March 12th, 2024 will have auto-generated rules named Create dynamic objects associated with them, but the rules you create from this point forth will be named whatever you choose to name them. Sort conversation messages by created dateCORE API UPDATE

You can now sort messages returned by the List conversation messages endpoint by their creation date.The endpoint now includes the query parameters sort_by and sort_order. Set sort_by to created_at, and then specify whether you want the sort_order to return messages as asc (oldest first) or desc (newest first) results.

Replacing third-party cookies in Front pluginsIMPORTANT

In a significant move towards enhancing user privacy, major web browsers are on a trajectory to deprecate support for third-party cookies to limit cross-site tracking. This shift has notable implications for developers of Front custom plugins or third-party integrations that rely on third-party cookies for authentication and other functionalities. Understanding this transition is crucial to ensure the continued seamless operation of your plugins once third-party cookies are fully deprecated. Google's Countdown to Q3 2024Google has made clear its intent to fully deprecate third-party cookies in Chrome browsers by Q3 2024. If your current plugins use third-party cookies, you will have to adapt them by Q3 2024 to avoid loss of functionality in Chrome. This deprecation impacts any user on Chrome-based browsers and the Front desktop app. For more details on Google's deprecation timeline, refer to their official blog post. Breaking changes to the Analytics endpointIMPORTANT

We are making a breaking change to the Create a new analytics export endpoint offered by our Core API. The endpoint will now require you to specify the columns that will be present in the export. Previously, the endpoint generated an export that included all available columns. In addition, three columns will be deprecated from the export: Resolution time, Replies to resolve, and Final resolution. You should use Total reply time, Replies to resolution, and Stage resolution time instead. Why are we making these changes?We are making these changes for the following reasons:By explicitly specifying the columns you need in the export, future additions to the available columns will not affect your export. This ensures backwards compatibility as we continue to enrich the Analytics data. Customers who need a subset of columns in their exports can benefit from faster exports and smaller response sizes. Event limit added to analytics exportsCore API Update

The Fetch an analytics export endpoint now enforces a maximum of 5,120,000 events or messages within a single export. If your export exceeds this number, the API will return a response with the status parameter set to too_big. To address this scenario, reduce the time period of the export and fetch it again.

We just launched a new sample plugin application on the Developer Portal that demonstrates how to use the Plugin SDK to load data from an external system of record and display it to the Front user. The plugin provides advanced interactivity, allowing the Front user to reply to conversations with contextual data or attach documents from the external system to the draft. In our example, we mock a Transportation Management System (TMS) that might be used by a logistics company to manage data about transactions or shipments. New closeDraft method availablePlugin SDK

Composer plugins now have access to a closeDraft function, which both closes the composer plugin and the draft composer in Front. This is useful for plugins that send messages directly within the modal window. For example, in the following screenshot, the Send Template button sends a message template through a channel, and uses the closeDraft function to close both the composer modal that contains the button AND the draft composer behind it. Note that this method is available for composer plugins but not sidebar plugins. Learn about the closeDraft function on the Developer Portal.

Tag endpoints will start returning paginated resultsImportant

This announcement details a potentially breaking change to the Core API. The changes might affect you if your company uses our API in one of your integrations or tools to return a list of company, team, or individual tags. TLDR: Please update your Front integrations by November 4th, 2023 so that they handle paginated results from the Tags API endpoints. Previously, these endpoints returned all the tags in one response, but we are changing this behavior so that the endpoints return paginated results instead. This change will result in better API performance when retrieving tags from a list of potentially hundreds or thousands of tags. If your integrations have been relying on the endpoints to return all the tags in one response, you will have to update those integrations so that they paginate through the list of results instead. Introducing composer plugins!Plugin Update

Developers can now build composer plugins! Previously, plugins could only be embedded within the right sidebar in Front, but it’s now possible for developers to build plugins that embed themselves in the composer instead, similar to how our existing integrations work with Google Drive or Dropbox. Users access composer plugins by clicking the icon for the app directly from the composer toolbar. Our developer community has long requested composer plugins as an entry point, so we’re happy to say that we heard you loud and clear. Composer plugins should provide a more intuitive user experience for certain types of plugins that didn’t work well within the sidebar and are much more natural fits for the composer, such as smart drafting, file-sharing, and email encryption use cases. Introducing Application Channels!Platform Update

You can now add channel types as features to Front apps. This makes it much easier to create new channel types, eliminating the need to submit a form and request channel credentials from Front. Instead, you can configure a server for your channel and obtain the App UID and App secret directly from your app settings. As part of this change, “partner channels” have been renamed to “application channels” to emphasize that you can now self-serve channels through the Front apps available on the Developers page in your Front settings. The functionality of application channels remains the same, and any existing partner channels have been migrated to the new application channels Developers page experience (Settings > Developers). Add webhooks to your appPlatform Update

You can now add webhooks directly to your app! This allows apps to get real-time notifications when relevant events happen (e.g. a message is received, a comment is added, a tag is added), which is important for use cases like bots, data sync, and analytics/reporting.Adding webhooks to your integrations no longer requires end users to manually configure the webhook through rules anymore. Instead, you can configure the webhook as a feature of your app in the Developers page in Front. Previously, developers building apps had to ask users to manually set up a webhook rule when installing their app, which was a poor user experience.
