Retroactive Tagging and Rule application

Currently, Front’s tagging system is proactive: it works perfectly for messages coming in after a rule is set. However, logistics is often about identifying patterns after the fact.

We currently have to perform manual searches and use "Bulk Actions" to tag messages. This is time-consuming, prone to human error, and often misses archived or moved threads. As such our Front Analytics reports are incomplete for the first 14 days of any new issue, making it harder to provide our shippers with accurate historical data.

We propose a feature that allows Admins to apply a Tag (or trigger a Rule) retroactively.
1. Selection: Create a Tag or Rule (e.g., If body contains "Toll Increase" -> Add Tag "Finances").
2. Backfill Option: A button that says "Apply to Historical Conversations".
3. Time Parameters: A date-picker to define the look-back period (e.g., Last 30 days, Last quarter, or Custom Range).
4. Background Processing: A status bar indicating the progress of the historical scan.

Why this matters for sennder & the Front Community:
• Accurate Reporting: Our Analytics would finally reflect the entire lifecycle of a problem, not just from the moment we realized we needed a tag.
• Operational Agility: We could pivot our strategy based on hard data from the past month in minutes, rather than hours of manual auditing.
• Clean Data for AI: As we move toward more AI-driven automation, having correctly labeled historical data is crucial for training and accuracy.

For any high-volume business, the ability to "re-classify" the past is just as important as organizing the future. We believe Retroactive Tagging would be a game-changer for the Enterprise tier of Front.
Who else in the community needs to backfill data for their Analytics? Let’s get this on the roadmap! 🚀

Hey Alexandru,

Alan here from the support team 🤘

Thanks for such a detailed and thoughtful suggestion, this is a great use case.

Front’s tagging and rules already do a strong job of proactively organizing conversations as they come in, and extending that capability to historical data would make the experience even more powerful. Being able to backfill tags and reclassify past conversations would add a lot of value, especially for analytics and reporting.

We do have an existing feature request for retroactive tagging, and your outline of how it could work in practice, along with the impact on reporting accuracy and operational agility, is incredibly helpful. Feel free to upvote the idea here and add some context to what you would like to see added https://community.front.com/ideas

While there’s no confirmed timeline just yet, this is definitely an area we’re looking to improve, and input like yours plays a big role in shaping that direction.

Really appreciate you taking the time to share this.
