The recent update put the delete button behind an ellipses. That’s a terrible idea. My laptop does not have a delete button. Give me my button back :(

Hi Aaron, thank you so much for sharing your feedback with us around the new interface update! We are super appreciative and have shared it with our product team so we can help refine this new experience more.

For the trashing of a conversation, the button “Backspace” or “Delete” should be able to help send the conversation that you are viewing to Trash. This particular button should be just next to the = / + key.

Also, for individual using the Gmail style keyboard shortcuts the # key can be used to help trash too.

We hope this additional context around the shortcut set is able to help, but if you don’t have the Backspace option on your keyboard, or access to use # via the Gmail shortcut set, may we please receive a screenshot of the keyboard that your device has?

@haley on a mac (full keyboard layout) there is a backspace and a delete button. The delete button is what deletes emails. However on a mac laptop, there is only a “backspace” button which does not delete emails. Furthermore, I don’t want to have to use two hands to clear out my email. All I should need is my mouse. It makes no sense for the trash button to be hidden like this.

Yep, removing the ‘delete’ button in the UI is quite a backward step in my view too.  If I have a bunch of emails to go through, some to archive, some to delete, (very few to keep), I want to just use my mouse to click either ‘archive’ or ‘delete’ to remove each one from my mailbox quickly.

I realise I can <ctrl>+click a few emails and then I get a ‘trash’ button to click on, but that’s not quite the same workflow as just working through the list of new emails from top to bottom (ie: just starting at the top, removing a message, and the next one scrolls up ready for actioning with either delete or archive).

Gmail has a similar feature where you can hover your mouse on the right of a message, and you get both a delete button and an archive button to click.  As a message is removed, the other messages scroll up so there’s very little mouse movement needed to work through a bunch of emails.

If you are a mouse user, then this update likely makes this a bit more complicated; meanwhile, I can confirm the shortcut works for macbook users.

I also delete emails and find myself reaching for the onscreen button if my hand is already on the mouse. Would love to be able to customize the toolbar.
