We’re working on a new version of the primary sidebar, which gives you better customizability over what you want to see in your personal workspace and introduces discussions, tasks, and mentions as sections. This is all about making you more productive and efficient in Front! Specifically, we’re adding

  • A refreshed edit sidebar experience that lets you choose what sections you want to see
  • The ability to drag lesser used sections under “more” to hide them
  • The ability to rearrange entire sections, like views and shared inboxes

Here’s what the edit sidebar experience looks like.

If you checked Discussions, your sidebar would then look like this.

This is not yet available for use in your account, but I’ll update you when it is. Want to be the first? Let me know below.

So what do you think? Some guiding questions to get you started:

  • Does this give you sufficient access to the sections you need? If not, what’s missing?
  • Do you expect the folders in the sidebar to be mutually exclusive? That is, would you expect to see a Discussion in your Open folder as well?
  • What sections are most important to you and which ones would you hide or rearrange?

Looking forward to your feedback!

I like that Tasks is available as an option.

I still haven’t found a way to find a list of Tasks in the current UI, aside from searching for channel_type:task.

With the new version subscribed is being replaced by mentions correct? does this mean we still have to unsubscribe to CNVs? i get mentioned by my team all the time so my subscribed is busier than my assigned to me. Out of habit once I've added the input they need i unsub myself from the conversation unless i know i need to see the reply. I can see some confusion from long time users with this change.

I miss having discussions in the sidebar and this was a repeated topic from my team who don’t like to hunt for it.

I would love the ability to drag a tag to that top section. I’m a heavy slack user and i can change the layout of their entire sidebar so mine looks nothing like most of my team. Personally my ideal upper most important top section would be in no particular order:

  • Assigned to me
  • subscribed (or mentions)
  • my personal inbox
  • a tag my team created exclusively for me
  • snoozed

When it comes to Shared i would love in instead of collapsing the whole section you could just collapse the subsections under for example in your picture i could still see Support and its number but 4 inboxes beneath i could collapse out of sight.

Yes, please add this feature to our account.

We currently have a workaround in place to display @mentions using tags and rules, but that solution stopped working about a week ago. Having a dedicated section for @mentions would be a huge improvement for us.

I’d also suggest including the option to uncheck specific sections under the Open view- particularly the Subscribed section. For our team, this section isn’t useful; it mostly serves as a backup way to spot @mentions. Ideally, we’d like to see @mentions directly within the Open section instead.

In our environment, we would hide the Discussions, Tasks, and Subscribed sections right away. Our team primarily works within shared inboxes, where tagging and archiving rules already manage conversation flow efficiently. Because of this, the Subscribed section ends up showing duplicate conversations, users go there only to find @mentions and bulk-archive the rest since they’ve already been handled in the shared inbox.

We haven’t implemented Discussions or Tasks in our workflow yet, though we can see their potential value down the line. For now, hiding them would keep things cleaner and more relevant for our current setup.

  1. Does this give you sufficient access to the sections you need? If not, what’s missing?
    1. Yes
  2. Do you expect the folders in the sidebar to be mutually exclusive? That is, would you expect to see a Discussion in your Open folder as well?
    1. I would expect every section except for “Open” to be mutually exclusive. However, leaving “Open” as the culmination of all other sections is critical for our team’s use of front.
  3. What sections are most important to you and which ones would you hide or rearrange?

As an additional follow-up. It would be really nice if there was a way to set a Default configuration based on the assigned role for a teammate so that new hires can come in with the layout that best suits the team they are assigned to.

@Nick Correct, today the only way to find a list of tasks of any status is by using search. Is that the view you want to see, versus being split by status? If so, why?

@kia_slade

Subscribed is not being replaced by mentions, they will both exist. We are planning on adding Discussions back as a folder that you can choose to show in your sidebar; by default, it will be unchecked / not visible. Interesting point about wanting a tag in the top section; we don’t currently have plans to support that but I’ll track that feedback. Is it correct to say you are optimizing for the sections you use the most?

Regarding the Shared section, we do have the functionality available today to collapse the inboxes under “Support”. If you hover over it, you should be able to see a down arrow that you can click.

@conniechen By default, yes. If I want to see tasks of a certain status, I can already do that by viewing a list of all items of that status, filtered to show only tasks.

When viewing by status, we can filter by type. Inversely, when viewing by type, I would like to filter by status. In other words, Tasks and Discussions views would have pills across the top of the conversation list including All, Open, Later, Done.

Mixing sections for states and types in the sidebar does seem slightly odd from a UX perspective, though. 🤷‍♂️

This! Great feedback and exactly what I was coming to add.

I’m most excited about the option for better visibility for discussion threads. Our team has greatly minimized the use of discussion threads due to the poor visibility. They have opted for alternative communication methods.

  • Does this give you sufficient access to the sections you need? If not, what’s missing? » Yes
  • Do you expect the folders in the sidebar to be mutually exclusive? That is, would you expect to see a Discussion in your Open folder as well? » No. For discussion threads specifically, I miss being able to easily see open vs archived vs snoozed.
  • What sections are most important to you and which ones would you hide or rearrange? » Most important are: personal inboxes, discussions. I would like to have the option to have other ones under the more section so they can be expanded only when I want to see them.

Should i be able to see @mentions as a category now or is that a future roll out?

The tag reason is we have a lto of our rules based on tag usable. I have 2 tags i look at all day long having the ability to have them higher up in my visibility is why i would prefer it.

@kia_slade not yet, it’s still in development and a couple months out.
